Introduction
My name is Glenys Rodriguez and I created this website to show 19th century Brooklyn in the eyes of Gabriel Furman-- one of the first demographers and visionary of Brooklyn. Searching for a topic for my individual project was not hard to do as I expected it to be. In fact, when working on a group project the first week of the fellowship, and while going through Furman's journals, I came across some entries where he recorded the census and population according to age, race, and occupation. In addition, he also had an amazing entry where he gave the history and origin of all the streets of Brooklyn Heights. When coming across these perfectly-cursive writings, I automatically knew what I aught to do. Becauase I have an interest of pursuing a career as an archivist, I thought about ways to corroborate with his entries in order to make them available for people in a more visualized, simplified, and contemporary way by using twenty-first century tools. It is important to think about why Furman thought important to have recorded so many chronicles. Again, for me, Furman was a visionary and demographer. He lived at a time that Brooklyn was growing in population-- it went from being a place of agriculture to an urbanized city.
