Below are the history of street names in Brooklyn Heights. I found this entry in Volume 3. pages 45-49. This entry caught my attention because it is interesting how Furman took up so much time to write all of the street names and their origin. Note that he was the only one who did this, since he lived during the time the streets were being acquired. I managed to include a Brief Bio of some of the Brooklynites who were involved in naming the streets of Brooklyn Heights we know today; in addition to some of their portraits I found at the BHS database.
- Fulton Street: named by the trustee in 1819 in honor of Robert Fulton, the Great Steam Engineer.
- Main Street: named after Joshua and Comfort Sands under an idea that it would be the main street in the town
- Adam Street: named by the Comfort and Joshua Sand in Honor of President John Adams
- Pearl Street: named by Comfort and Joshua Sands after street of that name in the city of NY
- Hamilton Street: named by Comfort and Joshua Sands in Honor of General Alexander Hamilton
- Jay Street: named by Comfort and Joshua Sands in honor of Governor John Jay
- Bridge Street: named by the Comfort and Joshua Sands at the time a project was afloat for uniting the city of New York and the town of Brooklyn by a bridge.
- Gold Street: named by Comfort and Joshua Sands a fanciful name
- Jackson Street: named by John Jackson in honor of his family
- Clinton Street: named by John Jackson in honor of Governor De Witt Clinton
- Navy Street: named by the Trustee in 1819 on account of its locality
- Barbarin Street: named by the trustee in 1819, in honor of Aime L. Barbarin Esq. then of the board of Trustee
- Stanton Street, named by the Trustee in 181, in honor of Henry Stanton Esq. then a number of the board of Trustee
- Johnson Street: named in honor of the Rev. John J. Johnson
- Myrtle Street: a fanciful name
- Liberty Street: named by Comfort and Joshua Sands after a street that in the City of New York
- Concord Street: named by Comfort and Joshua Sands a fanciful name
- Nassau Street: named Comfort and Joshua Sands, after the name of this island
- High Street: named by the Comfort and Joshua Sands on account of its situation
- Sands Street: named Comfort and Joshua Sands in honor of their family name
- Prospect Street: named by Comfort and Joshua Sands from the circumstances of this street running over high ground, from top of which is a beautiful prospect of the surrounding country.
- York Street: named by Comfort and Joshua Sands, a fanciful name
- Front Street: Named by Comfort and Joshua Sands after a street that name in the City of New York
- Water Street: named by Comfort and Joshua Sands from the circumstances of its running through the water of the east river in some parts
- Plymouth Street: named by John Jackson in honor of the landing place of our fore fathers in New England.
- John Street: named by John Jackson, his Christian name
- Marshall Street: named by John Jackson as a mark of respect for Dr. Marshall of the U.S Navy
- Monroe Street: named by Hezekiah Beers Pierrepont, in honor of President Monroe
- Henry Street: named by the Trustees in 1819 in honor of William Henry Esq. then a member of the Board of Trustees
- Hicks Street: named by Jacob M. and John M. Hicks, a fanciful name
- Furman Street: named by the trustee in 1819 in honor of William Furman Esq. then president of the board of Trustee
- Doughty Street- named by the trustee in honor of John Doughty Esq. a member of the Board of Trustee
- Poplar Street: named by Jacob M and John M. Hicks, a fanciful name
- Middagh Street: named by John Middagh in honor of his family name
- Cranberry Street: named by Jacob M. and John M. Hicks, a fanciful name
- Orange Street: named by Jacob M. and John M. Hicks, a fanciful name
- Pineapple Street: named by Jacob M. and John M. Hicks, a fanciful name
- Clark Street: named after Capt. Clark who formerly hold a ropewalk very nearly on this street, and the whole length of it, which walk was destroyed by fire.
- Pierpont Street: named by H. B. Pierrepont, through whose land it passes in honor of his family name
- Constable Street: named by H.B. Pierrepont as a compliment to his wife’s maiden name.
- Joralemon Street: named by the Trustee in 1819, in honor of Teunis Joralemon Esq. then of the Board of Trustee and the proprietor of a large parcel of land on this street.
- Livingston Street: named in honor of Phillip Livingston Esq. who was previous to the Revolution, and for sometime after proprietor of large tract of land through which this street passes.
- District Street: named by the Trustee in 1819- the west side of this street being the boundary line of the village of Brooklyn if the “District,” as it was formerly called.
